Liverpool came from two goals down to edge Villarreal 4-3 in a thrilling Champions League clash at Anfield.
Andoni Iraola’s side made a nightmare start and were behind inside four minutes when Georges Mikautadze punished a loose header from Virgil van Dijk before finishing from a tight angle.
Villarreal doubled their advantage just before the half-hour mark, Sergi Cardona latching onto a through ball before beating Alisson to make it 2-0.
Liverpool responded seven minutes later when Alexis Mac Allister headed home from Kostas Tsimikas’ corner before Ronald Araujo levelled in first-half stoppage time from Rio Ngumoha’s delivery.
The hosts completed the turnaround midway through the second half as Ngumoha cut the ball back for Mac Allister to score his second of the night.
Florian Wirtz then added a fourth just three minutes later, firing into the bottom corner after being picked out by Cody Gakpo.
Liverpool looked to be cruising, but substitute Tani Oluwaseyi pulled one back for Villarreal in the 87th minute to set up a tense finish.
The Reds held on, however, to make it three wins from three in the Champions League and continue their perfect start to the competition.
