There are rivalries, and there’s the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry that started in 1892 – only Minnesota vs Wisconsin has gone on longer than Auburn vs Georgia.
No, it’s not nearly as fierce as the Iron Bowl when Alabama takes on Auburn, but when you’ve played 130 times, you tend to have a few interesting moments that build into something generational.
Georgia just got by Alabama in a controversial 20-17 thriller – let’s just say the Bulldogs got a wee bit of a break on a key Crimson Tide deep shot – and now it’s the No. 1 team in the country.
Auburn has had two weeks off to get ready for this, and knocking the Bulldogs off of their lofty perch would put the first season under head coach Alex Golesh into hyperdrive.
Auburn vs Georgia: Quick Hits
- Auburn gets LSU and the Lane Kiffin show next, and then goes to Ole Miss.
- Georgia gets a week off before playing the Cocktail Party showdown against Florida in Atlanta, and then it goes to Ole Miss.
- Georgia has won seven times in the series since losing in 2017 (it was No. 1 in the nation then, too), but it won the SEC Championship a few weeks later. The Bulldogs have won 11 of the last 12 meetings.

Why Auburn Will Win
The Auburn defense has been great.
It might have been hit hard by Florida, but it does a lot of bending without breaking, thanks to plenty of sacks, lots of plays behind the line, and a third down defense that’s holding up well.
Offensively, the high-tempo Tiger attack should be able to keep the Bulldogs on their heels. Alabama ran well last week, but it only handed the ball off 29 times. Auburn won’t make that mistake, pushing for at least 35 carries, and close to 40, as it tries to hit the Georgia defense with tempo.
Why Georgia Will Win
Georgia’s defensive front will live in the Auburn backfield.
It’s a problem with Auburn’s style that it allows defenses to tee off on the quarterback and come up with too many tackles for loss.
The Tigers don’t worry about the time of possession battle, and they’re good at overcoming negative plays with something positive, but Georgia has the defense to swarm all over the quick-hitting short plays. Auburn doesn’t do anything deep, and Georgia should limit any yards after the catch or runs that get to the second level.
Auburn vs Georgia Prediction, Betting Lines
It’s been an interesting start to the Golesh era. The offense is supposed to dominate and take over, but it doesn’t do it enough. The defense that was so great last year has stayed strong, but it’s about to get pounded on.
Auburn’s two losses came when it allowed over three yards per carry. Georgia is averaging over six yards per pop.
Georgia 34, Auburn 16
