Agartala, October 17: Police detained a group of former insurgents after they allegedly blocked a national highway near Chandra Sadhupara in Baramura early Saturday morning, leading to a confrontation in which two police constables were injured.
According to Tripura Police officer Sunirmal Debnath, the group comprised former insurgents associated with the National Liberation Front of Tripura (NLFT) and the All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF), belonging to the Reang community. The group allegedly obstructed the highway at Sadhupara, prompting the administration and police to intervene to restore traffic movement.
Debnath said the Deputy Collector/Magistrate (DCM) initially appealed to the protesters to clear the road and issued an announcement asking them to disperse. However, the group allegedly refused to comply with the instructions, forcing the authorities to take further action.
“Given the need to ensure public safety, especially during the ongoing festive season, we took action to remove them from the site,” Debnath said.
He added that the detained individuals were subsequently transported to the detention centre at AD Nagar in Agartala.
The police officer further alleged that some members of the group used force against police personnel during the detention process. Two constables, identified as Prosenjit Das and Kajol Debbarma, sustained injuries in the incident and are currently undergoing medical treatment.
The incident occurred amid heightened security arrangements during the festive season, when authorities are focusing on maintaining public order and ensuring uninterrupted movement along major roads and highways.
