(ANSA) - ROME, 22 OTT - The government aims to expand juvenile detention facilities after the mass arrests of minors in rioting in Milan and other cities, Justice Minister Carlo Nordio said Thursday.
Some 80% of the 271 people arrested in Milan were minors and the youngest was 11 years of age.
"We have never seen such a wave of mass arrests involving minors," said Nordio in an interview on the program Start, broadcast on Sky TG24.
"Unfortunately, there are times when it becomes necessary to put these violent minors behind bars.
"The juvenile prison system is currently under significant strain.
"Just yesterday, we held a meeting to address this issue—both by allocating our limited funds to increase the capacity of juvenile detention centers and by exploring agreements to repurpose sections of adult prisons and penal institutions for use by minors." (ANSA).
