The Chargers could undergo a major mid-season shakeup.
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, current passing game specialist Adam Gase could step in as offensive coordinator if the team's offensive struggles continue, leading to them parting ways with Mike McDaniel.
"If they do continue to have this be the case, they do have someone inside the building who has been a really successful offensive coordinator, in Adam Gase," Rapoport said. "I know people sort of roll their eyes, he had at some point the highest-scoring offense in NFL history, pretty good coach. So if they do end up making a move, that would be someone who could step in."
While head coach Jim Harbaugh’s job remains secure despite the team's 0-5 start, the offense has completely stagnated under McDaniel. High preseason expectations have quickly faded as Los Angeles ranks 30th in scoring offense and 30th in passing, and quarterback Justin Herbert has visibly struggled in the new system.
While some of the offensive struggles also stem from injuries along the offensive line, uncharacteristic giveaways, dropped passes, and penalties, it nearly always falls on the shoulders of the person calling the plays.
Gase, who joined the staff this past spring, brings extensive play-calling experience, most notably directing the historic, record-breaking 2013 Denver Broncos offense under Peyton Manning.
However, the potential promotion is highly controversial. Gase carries a heavily scrutinized 32–48 head-coaching record, marked by dismal tenures with the Dolphins and Jets before a five-year hiatus from the NFL.
With a matchup against the Chiefs looming, Harbaugh may be forced to pull the trigger if the offense fails to show life this weekend.
