CAIRO — Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on the 17th that his presidential term ends in 2030 and that his departure from office is already settled. He reiterated that there would be no constitutional amendment to extend his rule.
According to Reuters and other foreign media, Sisi made the remarks at a televised military academy graduation ceremony in Cairo, saying Egypt's constitution would not be touched and that 2030 would mark the end of his term as the country's president. He added that the conclusion of his current term was a fully settled matter and not open to discussion.
Sisi, a former army general, took office in 2014 after ousting Mohamed Morsi, Egypt's first democratically elected president, in 2013. He won a second term in 2018, and a constitutional amendment approved by referendum in 2019 extended the presidential term to six years from four. That amendment also opened the way for Sisi to run for president once more. He won the election held in late 2023 and has been serving a third term since 2024.
