United Airlines is set to add four new routes this coming spring, expanding its reach from
San Francisco International Airport (SFO) with three new services and an extra route to Bermuda from
Chicago O'Hare International Airport (ORD). United will operate three of these four services with its mainline aircraft, while one will run through its regional arm, United Express.
As aviation insider Ishrion Aviation posted on X, the airline will begin three routes from San Francisco to Charleston(CHS), Hartford(BDL), and Oklahoma City(OKC) in late March, with the sole international route to Bermuda(BDA) launching in early April.
United Airlines Adds Three Routes From San Francisco
United will expand its domestic offering from its largest US West Coast base, with the new services departing from San Francisco International Airport on March 28 to Charleston, Hartford and Oklahoma City. Both Hartford and Oklahoma City will see a daily rotation, and Charleston gains a four-weekly service.
Oklahoma City is the only route in this annoucement that will be served by United Express, with the other two services operated by the airline's mainline narrowbody fleet. No other airline will serve these three routes from San Francisco nonstop.
Simple Flying reached out to United for comment; however, an airline spokesperson could not immediately be reached.
Chicago To Bermuda Launching In April
Beginning on April 3, United will launch a once-weekly service from Chicago O'Hare to Bermuda. The sole airport of the British territory in the Atlantic Ocean, L.F. Wade International, has no other nonstop services to Chicago, meaning United will hold the monopoly on the route.
Travelers returning from Bermuda to the United States enjoy the airport's US Customs and Border Preclearance facilities, meaning the passengers clear immigration formalities before boarding the aircraft, thus arriving back to the US mainland as domestic travelers. This reduces delays on arrival at key US airports and also enables passengers to transit quickly onto other domestic or international flights.
United already maintains a presence in Bermuda, with a year-round service from
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). Other US carriers serving the airport include American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and JetBlue. The local carrier, BermudAir, also operates year-round and seasonal flights to various US East Coast airports.
Cementing Expansion Plans At Charleston
United's decision to expand at Charleston further cements the airline's ambitions for the South Carolina airport. The airline's new nonstop service to San Francisco will provide the local community a convenient cross-country service, with easy access into the airline's wider network both domestically and internationally from the West Coast hub. Flights will operate on Monday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday nonstop, and prove the continued demand for access to transcontinental flights. Elliott Summey, President and CEO of Charleston International Airport, explained to Counton2:
“Nonstop service to San Francisco is an exciting addition for Charleston International Airport and the entire Lowcountry. As our region continues to grow, so does the demand for convenient access to major markets across the country and around the world. This new transcontinental route strengthens our connection to the West Coast, supports our business and tourism communities, and gives travelers more choices when flying from their hometown airport.”
Charleston International Airport is proudly the home of the Boeing facility that develops the highly popular 787 Dreamliner. The airport is already a focus city for low-cost carrier Breeze Airways, and United's expansion with services to San Francisco brings the airline's total network from the airport to six destinations, following Chicago, Denver, Houston, Newark and Washington Dulles. United currently maintains just 12.8% of all flights from the airport, with approximately 820,000 passengers served between August 2025 and July 2026, as suggested by The Frequent Flyer.
The only other transcontinental flights from Charleston are Breeze Airways' seasonal services to Los Angeles and Alaska Airlines' year-round flights to Seattle (SEA). The airport's largest airline by market share is that of American Airlines (25.9%), followed by Delta (23.7%) and Breeze (14.1%).
