In 2025, container ships accounted for just over percent of carbon dioxide emissions from maritime transportation entering and leaving European Economic Area (EEA) ports. Combined, container ships, bulk carriers, and oil tankers were responsible for more than half of the EU MRV fleet's total emissions in 2025. The most polluting vessel in Europe that year was the Cruise Barcelona Ro-pax ship.
