LAHORE: The Punjab agriculture department has advised farmers to ensure timely sowing of chickpea to achieve higher per-acre yields, with the recommended planting period varying according to the agro-climatic conditions of different regions.
According to a department spokesperson, the suitable sowing period in Gujrat, Narowal, Jhelum and Rawalpindi is from October 10 to November 10.
In the rain-fed areas of the Thal region, including Bhakkar, Khushab, Mianwali, Layyah and Jhang, October is the recommended sowing period, while farmers in irrigated areas should complete sowing between October 20 and November 15.
For Faisalabad, Sahiwal, Multan, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar and other districts of central and southern Punjab, the department has recommended sowing from late October to November 15.
The spokesperson further said that in highly fertile soils and sugarcane fields planted in September, the suitable period for chickpea sowing is October 20 to November 10.
Farmers have also been advised to use a seed rate of 30 kilogrammes per acre for normal-sized chickpea varieties and 35 kilogrammes per acre for bold-seeded varieties to achieve better crop establishment and productivity.
