By Zoila Palma: The University of Belize (UB), in collaboration with the Intercultural Indigenous Language Institute, the National Institute for Culture and History (NICH), and the National Garifuna Council, hosted a lecture titled “Indigenous Peoples as Partners in National Development” on October 13, 2026.
The event was held in recognition of Indigenous Resistance Day 2026 and brought together institutional and community leaders to discuss the meaning of development and the importance of ensuring that Indigenous perspectives are included in shaping Belize’s national priorities.
Presenters Dr. Filiberto Penados and Joshua Arana challenged conventional approaches to development, emphasizing the importance of recognizing Indigenous knowledge, relationships with land and natural resources, and community visions for the future. They highlighted these perspectives as valuable assets that can contribute to the country’s overall development.
The University of Belize expressed appreciation to the presenters, co-hosting institutions, and participants for contributing to the discussion.
