NC State football created the newest Power Four coaching opening Saturday. All after Stanford stunned North Carolina State 31-28 Friday. Now Wolfpack legend Philip Rivers rose as the trendiest replacement for coach Dave Doeren.
The same Rivers who rose as a past NFL Draft first rounder out of Raleigh. Right before becoming a beloved San Diego Chargers legend before wrapping his career with the Indianapolis Colts.
The former Wolfpack quarterback surfaced as the name to watch for this opening, per CBS Sports college football insider John Talty.

“One early name that has come up with industry sources: Former NC State great Philip Rivers. The successful Alabama high school coach interviewed for the Buffalo Bills head coach job in January and has a son committed to the Wolfpack,” Talty posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.
Rivers’ name certainly carries lots of praise in Raleigh. Now he’s carved out quite the career at the prep level.
Most still believe this becomes a huge jump for Rivers if he pursues the job. He’ll need to lean heavily into the College Football Transfer Portal right away. Plus he must operate with a not-so-strong NIL budget. Furthermore, he’d replace the winningest coach ever at NC State in Doeren, despite not surpassing the nine-win mark each season.
NC State likely won’t attract big name coaches. But outside of Rivers, On3 mentioned Duke head coach Manny Diaz as a possibility. Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson also earned mentioned. Meanwhile, former Cincinnati, Notre Dame and LSU coach Brian Kelly reportedly wants another HC job, which could lead to NC State making the call.
