If you haven’t heard of the wildly popular Terraria mod Calamity, it’s very difficult to sum up its fall from grace over the past few years. To call it infamous at this point is underselling it, as the decade-old mod has been subject to two separate accusations of “endangering minors,” an ongoing accusation that its developers were not paid “several thousand” dollars in wages, and, now, a cryptocurrency scam–which brings us to today.
However, all the context you really need to know is that, prior to October 9, 2026, Calamity’s Discord server boasted over 250,000 individual server members. That’s a pretty hefty number for a server of a long-abandoned Terraria mod, which is presumably why it caught the eye of a notorious Discord hacker by the name of “Kata.”
Since the developers announced that they were “ceasing all development” on the mod back in August, following the second wave of child endangerment allegations, Calamity has remained unfinished. Unfortunately for the community, this meant that the initial server-wide ping on October 9, which subsequently led to the crypto scam, seemingly gave some hope that the mod might be returning.
Then, an hour later, moderators in the r/CalamityMod subreddit put out an “EMERGENCY PSA” post warning users that the Discord server had been compromised: “If you are in the discord server, LEAVE THE DISCORD SERVER. If you are still in the discord server, DO NOT ENGAGE IN THEIR CRYPTO.”
During this hour-long window, the Calamity Discord server was spammed with links to a cryptocoin named after the server, which was then, unsurprisingly, immediately pumped and dumped after the community was informed of the scam.
According to a post on the subreddit, which was then confirmed in a separate post by the previous server owner, the Calamity Discord server was compromised after its owner was tricked into handing over access by two users masquerading as former moderators. After the scam was uncovered, one of the users in question revealed themselves to be Kata: a notorious figure who has reportedly hacked dozens of popular Discord servers over the past two years.
The Calamity server has since been wiped by a former moderator, who stated in a post that they were able to “nuke” the contents of the server, as the hackers had overlooked their admin powers. However, while all of the channels and messages were successfully wiped, Kata and another user, who is presumably either an alt account of Kata or a friend of theirs, are still attempting to maintain the grift.
The only remaining channel, simply titled “#announce,” features messages from one of the hackers stating that “no crypto slop will be posted” anymore and that “some wrong people got permissions.” Thankfully, the Calamity server seems well aware of the scam at this point, as tens of thousands of users have already left in the past two days.
