Two Botswana officials join a historic African contingent at the World Junior Championships in Cairo.
BONGANI MALUNGA
Botswana badminton officials Emmanuel Kgaboetsile and Sheba Seponono have earned a place on the global stage after joining a historic contingent of African technical officials at the 2026 VICTOR BWF World Junior Championships in Cairo, Egypt.
The duo are among 12 officials drawn from eight African countries participating in the prestigious championships, marking another significant milestone for Botswana’s growing influence in international badminton officiating.
Their involvement carries particular significance as Egypt hosts Africa’s first Badminton World Federation (BWF) major championship since 2002, ending a 24-year absence of such an event from the continent.
INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED
Kgaboetsile, an internationally recognised BWF umpire and Seponono, a BWF line judge and BCA-accredited umpire, are flying Botswana’s flag alongside officials from Algeria, Benin, Egypt, Ghana, Mauritius, Tunisia and Zambia. The assignment adds another chapter to an impressive international officiating career for Kgaboetsile.
The experienced Motswana recently served as tournament referee at the 2026 Lagos International in Nigeria, held from 26 to 29 August, before undertaking another refereeing assignment at the Cameroon International in September.
His involvement in the World Junior Championships further underlines his standing among Africa’s established badminton technical officials. Seponono’s participation is equally significant, reflecting the progress of Botswana’s female officials through the continental and international officiating structures.
In 2023, Seponono was among two female officials identified for assessments towards BCA accreditation, with Kgaboetsile expected to serve among the assessors. Three years later, both are representing Botswana within the same historic African officiating contingent.
CELEBRATING THE ACHIEVEMENT
The Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA) has celebrated the participation of its 12 officials, describing it as a historic achievement for African badminton. The championships, which began with the team competition from 5 to 10 October, have now progressed to the individual events scheduled from 11 to 17 October.
Beyond the prestige of their participation, the Botswana pair’s involvement highlights the country’s ability to develop technical expertise capable of contributing to competitions at the highest international junior level.
