There's a generation of millennial gamers who are haunted by an entity known as 'old Blizzard,' an allegedly more competent, creative, and virtuous version of the present-day Microsoft subsidiary based in Irvine, California.
For the nostalgia-afflicted, BlizzCon 2026 felt like a nod to those good ol' days of Blizzard—at least in terms of ambition and scale—as developers rolled out a slew of major announcements including World of Warcraft: Forever, Diablo 5, and an open world shooter in the StarCraft universe.
However, the most meaningful moment may have been the very first reveal that occurred on stage, when Blizzard president Johanna Faries received a tepid audience response after announcing that Heroes of the Storm—Blizzard's niche MOBA that had been relegated to bare bones maintenance mode in 2022—would be welcoming WoW big-bad Xal'atath as a new playable character.
Blizzard surely drafted dozens of versions of its stage presentation in the lead-up to BlizzCon, and would have been well-aware that announcing Heroes of the Storm's first new hero in six years would barely register on the audiences' radar compared to the rest of their slate. With that in mind, you have to wonder if leading with HOTS was not just a quirk of sequencing, but a conscious, conciliarity choice.
Sunsetting games that fail to reach certain commercial benchmarks is a widespread industry practice, and from a certain perspective, any backlash to HOTS being put on ice could have been seen as unrealistic and entitled—come on, at least the servers weren't shut down!
At the same time, you didn't have to be a hardcore HOTS player with hundreds of hours invested to understand the greater sense of betrayal. Blizzard may not have been an active participant in every aspect of the mythmaking surrounding itself during its glory days, but the company certainly enjoyed the perception that it had a uniquely honorable relationship with its fans. Even as it became more and more corporate, some still believed that Blizzard would uphold an implicit pact: 'We will never give up on a game before its community.'
In resuming active development for Heroes of the Storm, Blizzard seems to be expressing that this is a standard it still wants to live up to.
Even in the corners of Blizzard fandom that are harder to placate, BlizzCon gave reason for cautious optimism.
Well, not unconditionally. There are no roadmaps or grand promises regarding the future of HOTS, and the game's affectionately dubbed "Janitor" James Yen has carefully managed his tone in interviews to focus on "sustainability" and make sure the 'we're so back' mentality doesn't get out of hand. Yet, for the time being, this seems to be a more-than-acceptable state of affairs for the HOTS community. There's an air of optimism that hasn't existed in years, and HOTS players are even getting a WoW Classic-esque nostalgia rush out of complaining about how overtuned Xal'atath is at release.
Even in the corners of Blizzard fandom that are harder to placate, BlizzCon gave reason for cautious optimism. Warcraft 3: Reforged had a disastrous launch in 2020, with gamers criticizing the quality of the remastered graphics, lack of multiplayer features, and the general feeling that it needed to bake for a while longer. Reforged has received several updates since then, culminating in the release of Forsaken Kingdom—a brand-new, full-length DLC campaign—over BlizzCon weekend.
The reception hasn't been universally positive—there's been sticker shock around the $30 price point, and there are lingering complaints from the original Reforged launch that may be impossible to realistically address. However, at risk of generalizing about a community that contains both ultra-traditionalist PvP gamers and casual fans who are primarily in it for the story, most players seem to agree that Forsaken Kingdom is a damn cool thing to happen to a 24-year-old RTS classic.
On the other hand, game series like Diablo might reveal where this newfound care for legacy games can only go so far. Shortly ahead of Diablo 4's release in 2023, Diablo 3 was put into unofficial maintenance mode with no new content being actively developed. Huge updates for Diablo 1: Resurrected, Diablo: Immortal, and Diablo 4 have been rolling out this year in celebration of the series' 30th anniversary, but the absence of Diablo 3 content has been conspicuous—especially considering that Blizzard has lauded the game's staying power with millions of players.
Presumably, fears of user cannibalization are keeping all resources for the 'mainline' series committed to Diablo 4 (and later, to Diablo 5), which does make sense when you reluctantly put on your shareholder hat. However, with World of Warcraft announcing its third different fork, you have to wonder why Blizzard is so averse to Diablo fans sampling a wider variety of demon flesh.
...There's still a heart beating at Blizzard's core, and if you're lucky, some oxygen might find its way to the game you love.
The most cynical interpretation would be that nothing has truly changed at Blizzard, and that its specific decisions regarding new content for old games were a result of which projects passed the cost-benefit-analysis test.
Yet, even without access to internal figures, it's hard to imagine a world where a decision-maker looked at a new HOTS hero and said "yes, this is definitely the profit-maximizing investment at this time" or "yes, this is the big PR move that will get everyone back on our side."
Instead, it seems like limited opportunities for Blizzard to be the 'good guy' are emerging, and when all goes well, developers with great affinity for specific franchises have been in place to seize them.
So, no, the old Blizzard people are nostalgic for isn't back, and may never be. However, there's still a heart beating at Blizzard's core, and if you're lucky, some oxygen might find its way to the game you love.
