Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Mallam Shehu Dikko, has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to the successful hosting of the 48th Ordinary General Assembly of CAF in Abuja and the 2026 CAF Awards in Lagos.
Dikko gave the assurance on Tuesday during a courtesy visit by a CAF delegation inspecting facilities in Abuja, after similar inspection in Lagos ahead of the events.
He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu readily approved the hosting after being briefed by CAF leadership on the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit in Kenya five months ago, describing both events as opportunities to showcase Nigeria’s organisational capacity.
“President Tinubu and the government are very committed to hosting bespoke events that will underscore the capacity of our people in organisation and management of high-profile events,” Dikko said, while acknowledging the support of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
He explained that Abuja will host the General Assembly proceedings while Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub, will stage the Awards, adding that the NSC is working with agencies including the Nigeria Customs Service to ensure seamless entry and exit for delegates.
Dikko noted that ongoing investment in sporting infrastructure and plans to mobilise funds through a Sports Infrastructure Development Bond will further position Nigeria to host major international competitions.
Earlier, Acting General Secretary of the NFF, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, assured that the Federation will deploy personnel to collaborate with CAF to deliver a successful General Assembly and memorable Awards ceremony.
