Buffalo Mountain’s new conservation area offers scenic landscapes, protected forests and outdoor experiences near the Blue Ridge Parkway and Blacksburg.
There are landscapes that become part of a place’s identity long before they receive an official designation. Buffalo Mountain, with its rounded summit, expansive views and deep Appalachian forests, has long been one of Southwest Virginia’s most recognisable natural landmarks.
Now, more than 2,200 additional acres around the mountain are set to remain protected, giving the landscape a stronger shield against future development, states an online release by the official website of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
A major expansion of protected land
According to the release, Virginia has established a new State Conservation Area at Buffalo Mountain following the acquisition of 2,211 acres across Floyd and Carroll counties.
The property surrounds the existing Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve, creating a larger protected landscape and bringing the total acreage of Department of Conservation and Recreation-owned land at Buffalo Mountain to 4,332 acres, adds the online report. If we go by the release, the acquisition was carried out in partnership with The Conservation Fund, with $9.5 million in federal Forest Legacy Program funding helping make the purchase possible.
The newly protected property will be managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation, which plans to develop a management strategy and expand opportunities for public access. The move builds on decades of conservation efforts in the area. An earlier phase of the project added 975 acres to the existing natural area preserve, taking the dedicated preserve to 2,121 acres, claims the online release.
Protecting forests and trout streams
The importance of the acquisition extends well beyond hiking trails and scenic overlooks.
The property contains nearly 14 miles of native trout streams, including waterways supporting wild populations of eastern brook trout and brown trout. These streams sit within the headwaters of the New River, an important water source for communities in Virginia and West Virginia. The river provides drinking water to more than 675,000 people, making the protection of surrounding forests and waterways an important part of maintaining water quality. The landscape is also home to extensive mature forests, including Southern Appalachian Rich Cove Forest, a habitat type known for its ecological diversity. Keeping the surrounding acreage intact creates a buffer for the existing natural area preserve while helping protect wildlife habitat and forest connectivity.
A destination for outdoor enthusiasts
Located in a rural part of Southwest Virginia, the conservation area lies only a few miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and less than 50 miles from the growing Blacksburg area.
Buffalo Mountain has already established itself as a popular destination, with about 15,000 people visiting the preserve each year, claims the online report. The summit is a major draw, offering broad views across the surrounding Appalachian landscape. With the new conservation area, visitors will eventually have access to more opportunities for low-impact recreation while the most sensitive natural resources remain protected.
Conservation with a long-term view
The project also represents a significant collaboration between state and federal conservation agencies, The Conservation Fund and the Lawson family, which had owned the property for more than a century. The land was acquired by The Conservation Fund before being transferred to Virginia for permanent protection, adds the report.Federal Forest Legacy funding for the purchase comes through the Land and Water Conservation Fund, which supports conservation and recreation projects across the country.
