Maple Finance’s governance token, SYRUP, had a rough week. The token dropped roughly 24% over the seven days ending October 19, 2026, and was changing hands between $0.187 and $0.19.
The awkward part is the business underneath. Maple’s revenue, assets under management and token buybacks all climbed recently, which is usually the kind of report card that earns a gold star, not a sell-off.
SYRUP also trailed Bitcoin and Ether over the same stretch.
Strong numbers, weak chart
Start with revenue. Maple brought in $1.57 million in September, up from $1.47 million in August.
The lending book looks healthy too. Maple’s assets under management reached between $4.7 billion and $4.8 billion in Q3 2026, an 18% increase from a year earlier.
Loans outstanding stood at $1.67 billion, up 12% year on year.
Then there are the buybacks. September’s revenue-funded buybacks doubled compared with August.
On October 9, Maple executed a $314,116 buyback that scooped up 1.37 million SYRUP tokens. The average price paid was about $0.229.
With the token now near $0.19, that purchase sits underwater.
How the buyback machine works
Maple’s repurchase program runs under a governance proposal known as MIP-021. In practice, MIP-021 directs either 10% or 20% of revenue toward buying back SYRUP. Which rate applies depends on whether revenue clears certain thresholds.
Why the token is falling anyway
The disconnect between Maple’s metrics and SYRUP’s price comes down to a few forces. Broad weakness across the altcoin market is the first.
Thin liquidity is the second factor. When there are few buyers and sellers on the order books, a modest wave of selling can push the price down further than it would for a deeply traded asset.
The third is technical. SYRUP broke down below key moving averages, which are trailing price averages many traders use to gauge trend direction.
A long way from the peak
SYRUP’s all-time high landed somewhere around $0.65 to $0.92 in mid-2025, depending on the data source.
SYRUP’s market capitalization is estimated between $220 million and $314 million. Circulating supply is roughly 1.2 billion tokens.
What this means for SYRUP holders
The buyback program is the variable to watch. Because MIP-021 links repurchase rates to revenue thresholds, continued revenue growth could lift Maple into the higher 20% allocation tier, increasing the steady demand the protocol provides.
