Kharwastan Secondary School matric pupils have described the Afrikaans Paper 3 and History exam as fair and manageable, although some were challenged by unfamiliar essay and transactional-writing topics.
Kesiah Moonsamy of Queensburgh said the Afrikaans examination comprising essay and transactional writing was a good paper.
Moonsamy said she was caught off-guard as none of the topics she expected to be tested on were a part of the exam.
“The essay section was hard for me. The essay I prepared and learnt was not a part of the exam questions. I had to improvise to suit the exam question. The section on transactional writing also had a question which I was not prepared for. I did manage answering it though,” said Moonsamy.
Moonsamy manages to achieve A symbols in Afrikaans despite finding sections and tests difficult at times.
She has set her sights on a career in chartered accounting.
Sumayan Doorsamy from Malvern had challenges in meeting the word count.
“The essay that I prepared for came up. Meeting the word count and using the correct grammar
proved challenging. I enjoyed the transactional writing section. I could relate to the topic and it was easier to write about,” said Doorsamy.
She said consistent studying and keeping away from distractions like his cellphone was a part of his preparation for the matric examinations.
“Consistent work helped me. I would get help when I did not understand something. The examinations are challenging.”
Doorsamy, who is passionate about helping people, believes nursing is the career choice for him.
Danaé Govender from Woodhurst said the Afrikaans paper was “fair and manageable”.
“I prepared an Afrikaans essay on a topic that was not on the list, so it was challenging writing on a completely different topic.
“The history paper was amazing. The school has an incredible support system. The principal is wonderful. The teachers were well organised and their teaching methods were wonderful. We were offered admirable support by the teachers,’ said Govender.
She intends studying B.Com Law to follow a career in commercial law.
Matric pupils will write Information Technology on Wednesday and Accounting on Thursday.
