Remittances from Egyptians working abroad reached a record $33.9 billion in the first eight months of 2026, according to the Central Bank of Egypt.
The figure was 27.2% higher than the $26.6 billion recorded during the same period last year, an increase of about $7.3 billion.
The total between January and August has already exceeded the $29.6 billion received during the whole of 2024 and is approaching the $41.5 billion recorded across 2025.
Remittances reached about $4.2 billion in August alone, up 21.7% from $3.5 billion in the same month last year.
However, the monthly figure was about $300 million lower than in July, when inflows reached approximately $4.5 billion.
The latest figures continue a sharp recovery in money sent home by Egyptians overseas.
During the first eight months of 2025, remittances had risen 47.2% year-on-year, from $18.1 billion to $26.6 billion.
The increase followed a period in which Egypt's foreign currency shortage and a large gap between official and parallel exchange rates had pushed some overseas Egyptians away from formal banking channels.
Egypt moved to a more flexible exchange-rate regime in March 2024, allowing the value of the pound to be determined more closely by market forces.
The International Monetary Fund said remittances rose 62% year-on-year during the second quarter of 2024 and 85% in the third quarter after the official and parallel foreign exchange markets converged.
The currency shift formed part of a wider $8 billion IMF programme agreed in 2024.
For the whole of 2025, remittances reached $41.5 billion, up 40.5% from the previous year.
They totalled $36.5 billion during the 2024-25 financial year, according to Central Bank balance-of-payments figures.
The remittances surplus stood at $36.3 billion during that financial year, while Egypt's current-account deficit fell to $15.4 billion.
Remittances are a major source of foreign currency for Egypt, alongside exports, tourism, Suez Canal revenues and investment.
The Central Bank did not provide a breakdown of the countries from which the latest transfers were sent or the channels used to send them.
