Minnesota Timberwolves standout Jaden McDaniels recently signed a one-year, $40 million extension ahead of the start of the Timberwolves season on Wednesday. The move guarantees McDaniels will remain a key member of Minnesota’s rotation for the foreseeable future, extending him through the 2029-2030 season. With the extension, he’s also made history.
According to a report by Michael Scotto, McDaniels is the first player in league history to secure an extension on an already favorable contract.
“Jaden McDaniels becomes the first player in NBA history to secure an extension with three fully guaranteed seasons remaining on a non-max contract. The deal was negotiated by Nima Namakian of Innovate Sports and Bill Duffy of WME Basketball,” Scotto posted on his X account.

The Timberwolves selected McDaniels with the 28th pick in the 2020 draft, and he quickly emerged into a centerpiece of the Timberwolves’ offense and defense as Minnesota has become a contender in the Western Conference with the ascension of Anthony Edwards.
Last year, McDaniels averaged 14.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 1.1 steals, and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting 51.5% from the field and 41% from three. His numbers increased in the playoffs, where he averaged 16.3 points per game and shot 44% from the field.
After the Timberwolves’ preseason loss to the Detroit Pistons, Anthony Edwards praised McDaniels, calling him one of the best two-way players in the game.
“I think Jaden is one of the best two-way players in the NBA, if not the best…Just him getting more touches in ball screen actions, being more involved, I think he’s gonna average 20, 25 points easy because he just knows how to play the game.”
Edwards, McDaniels, and the Timberwolves start their season against Giannis Antetokounmpo in the new-look Miami Heat on Wednesday.
