THE government has stopped short of committing to equal development allocations for all MPs, saying a proposal to legislate the funding must be thoroughly reviewed against constituency needs and the country’s financial position.
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs) Datuk Mustapha Sakmud said allocations must take into account local development priorities and efforts to improve constituents’ wellbeing.
“The proposal to enact a specific law on these allocations is a policy matter that must be reviewed comprehensively,” he said in a written parliamentary reply on Thursday (Oct 15).
Mustapha said the government remained committed to prioritising public development and welfare regardless of the constituency in which people lived.
Allocations for public infrastructure projects and programmes benefiting the people were channelled through existing government mechanisms based on the needs and priorities of each constituency, he added.
He was responding to Khoo Poay Tiong (PH-Kota Melaka), who asked whether the government was prepared to enact legislation to ensure MPs received equal development allocations. - October 15, 2026
