The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned of severe thunderstorms, extremely high fire danger and soaring temperatures across parts of South Africa.
SAWS has issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms across most of the Eastern Cape, excluding the extreme north-east.
The storms could damage homes, property and other structures. They could also disrupt electricity supplies and communication services in affected communities.
Residents should keep an eye on changing weather conditions, secure loose items around their homes and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during thunderstorms.
Extremely high fire danger in four provinces
Meanwhile, SAWS has warned of extremely high fire danger conditions in parts of the Northern Cape, North West, Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal.
The warning covers places in the Northern Cape, Naledi Local Municipality in North West, parts of the Eastern Cape and areas within the King Cetshwayo District in KwaZulu-Natal.
Under these conditions, fires can start easily and spread rapidly, particularly where dry vegetation and strong winds provide fuel.
Residents should avoid lighting fires in open areas, burning rubbish or throwing cigarette butts onto dry grass.
intense heat continues in KwaZulu-Natal
People living in the north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal can expect another stretch of intense heat.
SAWS has issued a heatwave advisory for the area, with persistently high temperatures expected from Sunday, 11 October, until Tuesday, 13 October.
The prolonged heat could make outdoor activities uncomfortable, especially during the hottest part of the day.
Residents should drink plenty of water, limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat and check on older people, young children and others who may struggle with high temperatures.
Uncomfortable conditions in Eastern Cape
SAWS has also warned of extremely uncomfortable weather conditions in parts of the southern Eastern Cape.
High temperatures, particularly when combined with humidity, can make it harder for the body to cool itself.
People who work outdoors or spend long periods in the sun should take regular breaks, drink water and seek shade where possible.
Keep an eye on weather updates
With thunderstorms, dangerous fire conditions and intense heat affecting different parts of the country, residents should follow the latest SAWS warnings.
Weather conditions can change quickly, and people travelling between provinces should check the forecast before setting off.
