Samsung Electro-Mechanics (009150) said Kim Wi-heon, a vice president who heads the company's MLCC manufacturing technology team, received the Industrial Service Medal at the 21st Electronics and IT Day ceremony held on the 13th.
Kim was recognized for leading the development of core technologies and new products in multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) over 26 years, strengthening the competitiveness of South Korea's electronics and automotive components industries. MLCCs are key components that store electricity inside electronic products and supply it in a stable manner.
Kim, who joined Samsung Electro-Mechanics in 2000, developed the world's first MLCC in 2009 that delivered 1 microfarad of capacitance in a package measuring 0.6 millimeters by 0.3 millimeters. In 2011, he introduced a 2.2-microfarad product of the same size, contributing to the miniaturization and higher performance of smartphones. He later led the development of core materials and process technologies for automotive applications, and in 2022 and 2023 developed the industry's first high-capacity MLCCs for vehicles. Since 2024, as head of the MLCC manufacturing technology team, he has led the development of high-value-added MLCCs for artificial intelligence servers and expanded supply to global semiconductor companies.
"We will preemptively develop high-value MLCC technologies that will drive future industries such as AI and automotive electronics, and strengthen the competitiveness of South Korea's electronic components industry," Kim said.
