Masked men allegedly broke into the farmhouse of Ramesh Yadav, a state minister of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)’s OBC Morcha in Uttar Pradesh, around midnight on Monday, tied him up, and escaped with Rs 50 lakh in cash. The robbery came hours after he formally took charge of the post in Lucknow and returned to Kanpur.
The incident occurred in the West Para police station area, about 15 kilometers from the city. The intruders reportedly bound Yadav’s hands and feet before carrying out the robbery and fleeing.
Joint Police Commissioner Dr Vipin Tada and DCP Dipendranath Chaudhary reached the spot with a police team after the incident. Police have begun an investigation and are going through CCTV footage from the premises to identify the suspects and trace their movements. No arrests had been reported at the time of writing.
Yadav was named state minister of the OBC Morcha on October 1. He took charge on Monday in Lucknow and came back to Kanpur later in the evening, a few hours before the robbery.
Yadav has twice served as block pramukh, a post his wife, Shashi Yadav, has also held. He contested the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election from the Bithoor constituency on a Bahujan Samaj Party ticket.
