LSU commitment Peyton “Pop” Houston of Evangel was sidelined with a shoulder injury in the second quarter of the Eagles’ Friday (Oct. 16) home football game against Cornerstone Christian out of Texas, according to coaches at Evangel.
Evangel had jumped out to a 10-0 lead against Cornerstone and trailed just 14-10 at halftime. But the visitors (6-2) exploded in the second half without facing Houston and left Rodney Duron Field with a 49-23 victory.
“There’s a pain in the pit of my stomach about Pop’s injury,” Evangel (4-3) coach Denny Duron said.

Two doctors on the Eagles’ sideline looked at Houston but he was not transported to a hospital. Instead, he remained on the sideline with ice on his shoulder cheering for his team. The extent of the injury and how much time the highly recruited senior might miss will not be known until x-rays are taken per Duron.
In his place, Briggs Berlin, the son of former Evangel great Brock Berlin, took over the team and tossed a pair of TD passes.
“Briggs did fine and he’ll continue to do so until we see how the situation with Pop develops,” Duron said.
The 6-foot, 200-pound Houston is a 4-star recruit who had passed for 1,737 yards and 19 TDs coming into Friday’s contest.
