Assam: A crowd that had bought tickets to watch a film turned violent at Tilapara village in Langhin, in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, on the night of Monday, October 19. Angry at being unable to watch the screening, they smashed more than 100 plastic chairs and set them on fire in the middle of the Puja festivities.
Organisers had arranged for the screening of a film named ‘Chandum’ at the site. Many in the audience had bought tickets from the organising committee, but they were made to wait for a long time. As the wait stretched on and the film did not start, their patience ran out.
Tempers flared, and a section of the crowd began vandalising the venue. Chairs were thrown about and broken, and the broken plastic chairs were then set on fire. The scene left the venue in ruins.
Videos of the chaos have since gone viral on social media.

Much about the incident remains unclear. It has not been established why the screening was delayed, and no explanation has come from the organisers on whether the hold-up was caused by a technical fault or a lapse in arrangements.
There is no word yet on whether anyone was injured in the melee, or whether the flames spread beyond the chairs to the venue or nearby structures. The value of the damage has not been estimated, and it remains to be seen who will bear the loss.
