A police officer sustained a serious facial injury, while 10 people were arrested after trouble erupted during and after Liverpool’s Premier League clash with Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday.
According to the BBC, Merseyside Police confirmed that one man was arrested on suspicion of two offences of assault against a police constable following Manchester City’s 3-0 victory over Liverpool.
The force said the officer was injured and the suspect was arrested on Anfield Road after the match at around 18:30 BST. The officer was taken to hospital for treatment and “is now recovering at home.”
Five fans were also arrested on suspicion of tragedy chanting, while another was arrested on suspicion of being drunk and disorderly and assault. Two others were arrested for affray, and one person was arrested on suspicion of throwing items onto the pitch.
Sunday’s encounter was Manchester City’s first match since the club was found guilty of 114 charges relating to breaches of Premier League financial rules.
Commenting on the incident, Ch Insp Leanne Hobin said: “The officers and stewards are there to protect the public and keep them safe, and it is extremely disappointing that an officer has sustained a serious injury while carrying out that duty.”

On the five arrests linked to alleged tragedy chanting, Hobin said: “The tragic loss of life should never be a subject for tribal point-scoring.
“Football fans who chant about tragedies cause huge distress to the loved ones of people who died, and their behaviour has absolutely no place in football.
“We will continue to work with clubs to take action to identify any perpetrators and bring them to justice.”
She added: “Despite the actions of a few, the overwhelming majority of the 60,000 fans in attendance behaved well and I want to thank them for their co-operation.”
Manchester City faced a hostile reception at Anfield, arriving at the stadium through the entrance used by staff and contractors.
Liverpool supporters displayed half-and-half scarves bearing the words ‘Shamchester City – The Cheats’, while City’s team line-up was met with loud jeers.
Banners were also displayed inside the stadium, including one carrying the message ‘A Generation Of Supporters Cheated’.
