NEW DELHI, Oct 19: Mohammed Shami’s continued absence from India’s plans has raised questions over the selectors’ assessment of the experienced fast bowler, with growing calls for greater clarity following the announcement of the squads for the upcoming tour of New Zealand.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently announced the squads for a tour comprising two Tests, five one-day internationals and five T20 internationals. Shami’s omission has once again brought his fitness, workload and prospects of returning to international cricket under scrutiny.Former India batter Mohammad Kaif has questioned the lack of a clear explanation for the pacer’s continued exclusion, arguing that his contribution to Indian cricket and performances in domestic competitions warrant greater transparency from the selection committee.
Shami was instrumental in India’s run to the 2023 ODI World Cup final, finishing the tournament as its leading wicket-taker with 24 scalps in just seven matches. He entered the playing XI after Hardik Pandya’s injury and played a crucial role in strengthening India’s bowling attack.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, Kaif said the selectors should communicate the reasons behind decisions involving a player of Shami’s stature.
He also highlighted the fast bowler’s efforts in domestic cricket, where he has continued to pursue a return to the national side. According to Kaif, Shami claimed around 22-23 wickets in Indian conditions, underlining his ability to remain competitive despite his prolonged absence from international cricket.Shami last represented India in March 2025 during the Champions Trophy, which India won. His most recent Test appearance came in the World Test Championship final against Australia in June 2023.
His absence from the longest format has been particularly significant, with concerns reportedly persisting over his ability to withstand the physical demands of Test cricket.
Questions about his match fitness and workload have been cited as factors in the selectors’ reluctance to bring him back into the red-ball set-up.
For now, the key issue is not simply whether Shami will return, but whether the selection panel will provide greater clarity. (Agencies)
