Police are investigating after a man believed to be a foreign national was allegedly assaulted by about 50 people in Durban’s CBD on Thursday morning.
According to KwaZulu-Natal police, the victim, believed to be in his late 30s or early 40s, was declared dead at the scene following the alleged attack on October 22.
In a statement, KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said a group of people had been marching along Dr Pixley kaSeme Street towards Maud Mfusi Street when two men allegedly broke away from the group and approached the victim, who was standing on the roadside.
“It is further alleged that the victim was then assaulted by a group of about 50 people and he was declared dead at the scene,” Netshiunda said.
Police have opened a murder case and are working to identify those involved in the killing.
“Police are following several leads and using all investigative aids to identify possible suspects,” Netshiunda said.
The motive for the killing remains unknown, and police have urged community members not to circulate unverified information about the incident.
