The Los Angeles Chargers visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, October 18, with both teams heading in different directions. Los Angeles is 0-5 after losing 23-17 to Denver, while Kansas City returns from its bye at 4-0. Kickoff at Arrowhead Stadium is scheduled for 4:25 p.m. ET on CBS.
The matchup puts Justin Herbert’s injury-depleted offense against a rested Chiefs team benefiting from Kenneth Walker III’s arrival. Los Angeles has lost its last three games by one score, but protecting Herbert and containing Kansas City’s balanced attack present significant obstacles.

Chargers vs. Chiefs Key Injuries
Los Angeles’ offensive-line problems begin with Rashawn Slater, who is on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Joe Alt missed Wednesday’s practice with a neck issue, while left guard Kayode Awosika also sat out with a fibula injury. Herbert absorbed five sacks against Denver behind a makeshift protection unit.
The receiving group requires attention, too. Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston appeared on the injury report with foot and chest issues, respectively, while Tre’ Harris was listed as doubtful with a hamstring injury. Those listings are not substitutes for final game designations.
Kansas City is without Tyquan Thornton, who went on injured reserve with a dislocated ankle. Rashee Rice missed Wednesday’s practice with a hamstring injury, and left tackle Josh Simmons was limited by a back issue. Those concerns could increase the importance of Walker and Travis Kelce.
Chargers Betting Trends
Los Angeles is 0-4-1 against the spread this season, including 0-1-1 on the road. Its recent competitiveness has not translated into betting success, making the sizable underdog number less attractive than it initially appears.
Herbert’s struggles provide context. He has thrown seven interceptions and owns a 70.2 passer rating through five games. His 17 sacks are the league’s second-highest total, creating too many possessions where Los Angeles must overcome negative plays before it can threaten the end zone.
Still, Kansas City’s pressure production offers some hope. The Chiefs have not recorded a sack since collecting four in their season opener. If Los Angeles can prevent immediate penetration, Herbert should have opportunities to keep the offense moving rather than constantly improvising.
Chiefs Betting Trends
Kansas City is 2-2 against the spread despite its unbeaten record, and the over has hit in two of its four games. The Chiefs have also gone 8-11 against the spread after a bye under Andy Reid, including playoff appearances. Extra preparation does not automatically justify laying a large number.
The offensive improvement is more compelling. Kansas City averages 29.5 points per game, compared with Los Angeles’ 16.8. That scoring gap explains the market’s confidence, although covering still requires the Chiefs to create separation rather than simply control the game.
Walker gives Kansas City a reliable foundation. His 621 scrimmage yards rank among the league’s top five, and his rushing threat has opened play-action opportunities. That versatility should help the Chiefs navigate their receiving injuries without becoming one-dimensional.
Keys to the Matchup
Los Angeles must avoid obvious passing downs. Quick throws and efficient rushing attempts would reduce the protection burden and limit Herbert’s temptation to force difficult passes.
Kansas City needs its pass rush to capitalize on the weakened offensive line. Allowing Herbert comfortable pockets would give the underdog a route back into the game.
Derwin James’ availability also matters. He missed the previous two games, and another absence could create favorable opportunities for Kelce.
Chargers vs. Chiefs Prediction and Pick
The Chargers should compete early, but their protection problems make sustaining drives difficult. Kansas City’s balance and preparation advantage offer the stronger foundation for a second-half separation.
