The Philadelphia 76ers opened the 2026-27 NBA season with an impressive 106-100 victory over the defending champion New York Knicks on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. The matchup featured plenty of excitement, but the biggest storyline was LeBron James making his debut with Philadelphia after leaving the Los Angeles Lakers during the offseason.
James helped the revamped 76ers spoil New York’s championship celebration, giving Philadelphia an early statement win against one of the Eastern Conference’s top teams.
LeBron James Begins New Chapter
James finished his Philadelphia debut with 14 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. The 41-year-old superstar entered his record extending 24th NBA season with a new challenge, joining a roster built to compete for a championship.
Despite facing a hostile crowd in New York, James delivered a steady performance and helped Philadelphia execute when the game mattered most. His experience and playmaking gave the 76ers another important weapon alongside their talented young guards and established stars.
James was not the only major offseason addition to make an impact. Jaylen Brown, acquired from Boston, finished with 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists, giving Philadelphia another versatile scorer capable of creating opportunities on both ends of the floor.
Maxey Leads Philadelphia’s Offense
Tyrese Maxey led all scorers with 28 points, providing the offensive spark Philadelphia needed throughout the contest. Joel Embiid added 13 points as the 76ers worked through some early shooting struggles.
Philadelphia’s defense ultimately made the difference. The 76ers erased a double-digit deficit and delivered crucial stops late in the fourth quarter to prevent the Knicks from completing a comeback.
New York struggled to find consistent offense despite the energy surrounding its championship banner ceremony. Jalen Brunson scored 21 points, while Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 19 points and 12 rebounds.
A Promising Start for the 76ers
The victory gives Philadelphia an encouraging start to a season filled with championship expectations. With James, Brown, Maxey and Embiid sharing the court, the 76ers have plenty of star power.
The biggest challenge will be building chemistry and maintaining defensive consistency. However, defeating the defending champions on opening night provides an early reason for optimism as Philadelphia begins its pursuit of an NBA title.
