The Dallas Mavericks are one of the few remaining teams that need to trim down their roster before the start of the regular season. The Mavericks currently have 16 standard contract players on their roster, and need to cut at least one player, or make a consolidation trade ahead of their season-opener next week. And one player that’s making that decision quite difficult for the Mavericks is veteran big man Dwight Powell.
During a recent press conference, Mavericks head coach Dusty May acknowledged how Dwight Powell’s performance in training camp and preseason thus far has been quite noticeable, as per Noah Weber of The Smoking Cuban.
“Dwight has been very valuable so far to us. I think it’s evident that when he is on the floor, we function well,” May said. “It’s been a joy to get to know him and be around him. I try to stay out of that fray, deciding those types of things, but Dwight, he’s been very, very good for us.”

May also acknowledged that while he and his coaching staff may have some input in terms of roster needs, the final decisions are going to lie with team president of operations Masai Ujiri and general manager Mike Schmitz.
Powell is currently the longest-tenured player on the team, having been acquired via trade with Boston Celtics at the deadline in 2015. He’s been with the Mavericks ever since. The 13-year veteran came into camp with a partially guaranteed contract and needing a strong showing to make the final roster.
This past season, Powell appeared in 63 games for the Mavericks, including 12 starts, at a little over 14 minutes per game. He averaged 3.3 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.1 assists with splits of 64.4 percent shooting from the field, 28.6 percent shooting from the 3-point line and 69.6 percent shooting from the free-throw line.
