The Karnataka Rajya Shoshitara Seva Samiti has urged the Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company (GESCOM) to restore uninterrupted seven-hour power supply daily to agricultural pumpsets in Yadgir district citing severe agrarian distress.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday, State president of the organization Moulali Anpur said that the district is reeling under severe drought, marked by mounting drinking water crisis, acute fodder shortage and standing crops withering due to extended dry spells.
Farmers who rely on groundwater pumped through electric sets to save their crops are in deep distress after GESCOM reduced the daily three-phase power supply to rural areas from seven hours to six hours, Mr. Anpur said.
”The reduction in power supply has severely affected irrigation, leaving farmers helpless as their remaining crops dry up,” he said and demanded that GESCOM immediately revert to the earlier schedule of seven hours to protect livelihoods.
The organization warned that it will submit a formal memorandum to the district authorities pressing for immediate action.
Samiti members Ashom Watkar, Mareppa, Sahadeva and Anjaneya were present.
