Scotland’s record try scorer could play in Edinburgh’s EPCR Challenge Cup opener as bicep issue not as severe as initially thought.
Scotland winger Darcy Graham could make a shock return from injury this weekend after it was revealed he is contention to play for Edinburgh against Toulon on Friday.
However, Edinburgh defence coach Brad Davis has said that the national team’s record try scorer is not only ahead of schedule on his recovery but already available to return to action for the capital club. It is unclear if the Hawick native will feature against the French heavyweights this week but he is someone that the coaching staff can call upon if they choose to.
Darcy Graham and Grant Gilchrist available for Edinburgh vs Toulon but Duhan van der Merwe remains out
“We've got a great medical team,” explained Davis. “What we get told as coaches is that he's available for selection this week so he can come into the mix. It's a really positive thing for us as a club, and I'm sure everyone will be super excited about that.”
The Australian wasn’t able to clarify the exact nature of how or why Graham was first thought to be facing a longer spell out but is nevertheless thrilled to have a player of his calibre and influence back in the mix. Davis added that he was more than confident in the winger’s ability to come straight back in despite not having featured since their pre-season defeat to Harlequins where he picked up the injury.
“I think he's smart enough, and he's athletic enough that he knows his way around a rugby field, and the qualities that he possesses,” continued Davis. “So, players have that ability, even though they might have been out for a while, they pick it up, especially in those positions as well where he's light on his feet. I can't foresee any issues with that.”
It’s not the only positive selection news for Edinburgh, although certainly the most attention-grabbing. Davis also confirmed that veteran lock Grant Gilchrist will be available for Friday’s match but winger Duhan van der Merwe remains out.
