BATU PAHAT: An 18-year-old scrap metal collector pleaded guilty at the Yong Peng magistrate's court today to assaulting his 75-year-old grandmother with a belt and threatening her with a parang.
Khairul Adam Yusof entered the plea after the two charges were read out before magistrate Mustaqim Sukarno.
He was charged under Section 323 of the Penal Code with voluntarily causing hurt to his grandmother at a house along Jalan Labis-Yong Peng at 6pm on Oct 6.
The offence carries a maximum jail term of one year, a fine of up to RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.
The second charge was under Section 506 of the Penal Code for criminal intimidation by pointing a parang at his grandmother.
Both offences allegedly took place at the same time and location.
According to the facts of the case, Khairul had pressured his grandmother to seek a loan from a neighbour to cover his expenses. When she refused, he became angry and an argument broke out.
He then struck her left shoulder and back with a belt before threatening her with the parang.
Deputy public prosecutor Nur Shahzleen Ibrahim prosecuted, while Khairul was represented by National Legal Aid Foundation lawyer Tan Song Yan.
The defence applied for a social report from the Social Welfare Department, citing Khairul's status as a young offender. The court allowed the application and set bail at RM5,000 for both charges.
Khairul was unable to pay the bail.
The case was fixed for mention on Nov 24, pending the social report.
