Germany, Italy and Belgium have called for a mechanism allowing EU governments to halt legislation considered burdensome for businesses and economies.

The proposal aims to reduce bureaucracy, protect European industry and strengthen competitiveness. If introduced, the mechanism could give member states greater influence over EU lawmaking, changing how regulations are approved across the bloc.
In a letter to European Council President António Costa, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever called for faster planning and approval procedures.
They also proposed temporarily suspending certain regulatory areas under a new priority rule. The leaders urged the European Commission to reduce administrative burdens, particularly for small and medium-sized businesses.
However, the proposal did not specify how the emergency mechanism would operate or who could activate it.
