Home Assistant has released a new alpha version of its installer, introducing a live USB installation option for generic x86-64 computers. The update could make setting up Home Assistant OS on mini PCs and older hardware more straightforward, although the new functionality remains experimental.
Home Assistant is working on a new way to install its smart-home operating system on existing computers, potentially making it easier to turn an unused mini PC into a dedicated home automation hub.
The latest Home Assistant Installer release, published on October 23, 2026, introduces a live USB installation option for generic x86-64 PCs. The feature is currently described as a proof of concept, rather than a finished installation method.
What changes for mini PC owners?
Home Assistant OS can already run on compatible x86-64 hardware, but the existing installation instructions involve preparing bootable media and writing an operating system image to the destination drive.
The experimental interface aims to simplify the existing manual installation process, potentially making it easier to set up Home Assistant OS on compatible hardware.
The update also adds a full-screen interface for the live USB installer and introduces verification of Home Assistant OS images against signed checksums. Other changes include clearer drive identification and more explicit warnings before storage devices are erased.
These improvements matter because installing an operating system onto the wrong drive can result in permanent data loss. However, the new interface does not eliminate that risk, and users still need to check their destination drive carefully.

Is the new Home Assistant installer ready to use?
Not yet. Version 0.0.0-alpha.4 is a pre-release build, and Home Assistant has not confirmed when the new installation method will be ready for general use.
The release also contains numerous changes beyond the USB installation feature, including interface refinements, accessibility improvements and adjustments to installation workflows.
For users considering a mini PC installation, the distinction is important. The new tool suggests a simpler route may be coming, but it should not yet be treated as a fully tested replacement for Home Assistant's established installation instructions.
Home Assistant's official installation instructions remain the reference point for users setting up a system today.
