Police in Uttar Pradesh have arrested a married couple for allegedly killing a 28-year-old man, placing his body in a plastic sack and dumping it in a canal, news agency PTI reported.
The victim, who worked in Mumbai, was allegedly lured to the couple's home on October 10. Police said the woman's father and brother were also involved and are absconding.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Durga Prasad Tiwari told PTI that police found the body of an unidentified man in a plastic sack on the banks of the Piprahwa canal on October 11.
Police circulated pamphlets carrying the man's photograph, following which his family identified him as Akash Gupta, a resident of Basti district and the son of Mahadev Gupta.
On the basis of a complaint filed by Akash's brother, police registered a case at Matera police station on October 13, naming Rajkumar Gupta and his wife, Poonam Devi, as accused.
Police arrested the couple after examining phone records and CCTV footage and questioning them, ASP Tiwari said.
According to the officer, Akash was in a relationship with Poonam. Her husband knew about the relationship and had filed a police complaint against Akash. Rajkumar claimed that Akash continued to pressure Poonam to meet him despite being cautioned.
The couple allegedly invited Akash to their home in Shravasti on the evening of October 10 under a pretence. After an argument, Rajkumar, Poonam, her father Phoolchand and her brother Anuj allegedly strangled Akash with an electrical wire and beat him with sticks, killing him, the officer said.
The accused allegedly placed the body in a plastic sack and dumped it in the canal, where police found it the following day.
On the basis of information provided by the accused, police seized the electrical wire and two sticks allegedly used in the crime, along with a Bolero vehicle used to transport the body.
Police have arrested Rajkumar and Poonam in connection with the killing and are trying to trace Phoolchand and Anuj, the ASP said.
