Commissioner of the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage P. Shivaraj on Friday said preserving and promoting culture and heritage is the collective responsibility of society.
He was speaking after flagging off a heritage cycle rally organised by the Departments of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage and Tourism at the Rangacharlu Memorial Town Hall premises here as part of Mysuru Dasara-2026.
Describing Mysuru as the cultural capital of Karnataka, Mr. Shivaraj said the State was renowned for its rich cultural traditions and historical legacy. The Dasara tradition, which originated under the Vijayanagara rulers, had introduced Karnataka’s cultural heritage to the world, he said.
Preserving this legacy was one of the primary objectives of the Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage. It was also important to create awareness among young people and children about the history of Dasara and the State’s ancient cultural traditions, he added.
He emphasised the need to pass on the traditions and heritage preserved by previous generations to future generations.
Senior judge Nagaraj Siddappa Ankasadoddi, who was present, said cycling for daily commutes would help protect the environment and improve health, including cardiovascular fitness.
Trekking enthusiast Preethi Appaiah, retired professor of the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology N.S. Rangaraju, and others were present.
