A Nairobi-based priest and academic has earned a place on one of the Catholic Church's most prestigious theological bodies. Rev. Prof. Patrick Mwania, C.S.Sp., Vice Chancellor of Tangaza University in Kenya, was appointed by Pope Leo XIV to the International Theological Commission on Sunday, 19 October 2026.
Mwania is among 24 newly appointed members joining the commission for its eleventh five-year term, which runs from 2026 to 2031. Six members from the previous cycle had their mandates renewed, bringing the total membership to 30, slightly up from 28 in the preceding term.
Tangaza University marks a historic milestone
Tangaza University responded with a formal congratulatory statement, recognising the appointment as a landmark moment for the institution. The university said:
"This appointment is a significant recognition of Fr. Mwania's contribution to theological scholarship and the Church. We celebrate this milestone and wish him wisdom and grace as he takes on this responsibility."
The commission's core function is to assist the Holy See, particularly the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, in examining doctrinal questions of major significance. Members are drawn from different theological traditions and nations, appointed by the Pope following consultation with Bishops' Conferences.
A more diverse commission for the new term
The 2026–2031 term reflects a deliberate push toward broader global representation. Both Asia and Africa now hold four seats each on the commission, while South America accounts for five members. Europe, which previously held 14 seats, has been reduced to 13. North America retains three seats and Australia one.
Lay representation also expanded considerably. The number of women on the commission rose from five to eight, five of whom are laywomen, alongside three laymen. The overall number of lay members doubled compared to the previous term.
Msgr. Piero Coda was confirmed for another five-year term as Secretary General, alongside five renewed members including Father Alberto Cozzi, Father Simon Francis Gaine, Professor Reinhard Huetter, Sister Isabell Naumann, and Sister Josee Ngalula.
The commission was originally established by Pope Paul VI in 1969 and has published 33 documents over its history. Its first plenary session of the new term is scheduled for 23 to 27 November.
Mwania's appointment adds to a growing list of African scholars taking up influential roles within the Vatican, a shift that signals the Church's recognition of the continent's growing theological voice.
