A court has sent a National Citizen Party (NCP) leader to jail following his arrest in a rape case filed by a woman in Bandarban, according to police.
Shoi Kya Ching Marma, 55, joint convener of the NCP's Bandarban district committee, was arrested last night (16 October) after the victim filed the case at Bandarban Sadar Police Station at around 10pm.
According to the case statement, the woman, who divorced her husband five years ago, lives in the town with her son and daughter. The accused is her distant brother-in-law.
The case alleges that he repeatedly raped her over the past five months at Saini Resort, which he operates near Bandarban Shishu Park, after promising to marry her.
It further alleges that on the day of the incident, he called her to the resort and raped her before having lunch together. Later, when she raised the issue of marriage at around 3:30pm, he refused to marry her and behaved abusively.
He also allegedly assaulted her physically.
When people nearby gathered after hearing shouting, the accused allegedly pushed the woman and fled the resort.
Mongsa Pra Prue Chowdhury, convener of the NCP's Bandarban committee, said the district unit is deeply disturbed by the incident and will take appropriate action against the joint convener in line with the party's constitution and central decisions.
Kamrul Islam, officer-in-charge (investigation) of Bandarban Sadar Police Station, said police arrested the accused at his home in Madhyam Para under Bandarban Sadar upazila.
After completing the legal process, authorities sent him to the district jail, he added.
