In his third start of the 2026 season, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. was on pace for another strong showing as his team clung to a late fourth-quarter lead in its third-straight primetime game. However, after the Baltimore Ravens tied the game with under a minute in regulation, the former Washington star suffered a rib injury on the Falcons' final drive of the fourth quarter.
Despite starting the game 0-for-4, the third-year gunslinger found his rhythm, finishing the night 19/32 for 240 yards and a touchdown. After jumping out to a 7-3 lead in the opening period, the Falcons maintained the advantage until Baltimore, led by backup quarterback Tyler Huntley, found the end zone and converted a two-point conversion with 40 seconds left to send the game to overtime.
Penix, who missed the first two games of the year due to an ACL injury suffered last season, had completely turned the Atlanta offense around after making his first start of the year in Week Three. Since Penix's return, the Atlanta offense led the NFL in points over the last two weeks, picking up a pair of road wins against the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints.

While looking to lead a game-winning drive in regulation, Penix was blindsided by Baltimore linebacker Tavius Robinson. The play resulted in a fumble that was ultimately recovered by the Falcons, but their starting quarterback was slow to get up. After backup Tua Tagovailoa came in on second down, the starter returned to action for just one play before being forced to punt.
Once overtime began, the Falcons offense didn't see the football until the 2:50 mark, as Baltimore put together a lengthy touchdown drive to go up 30-23. With their backs against the wall, Tagovailoa came out in Penix's place, as the former UW star could be seen sitting in frustration with a towel draped over his head after NBC's Melissa Stark reported he attempted to return to the game.
On the second play of the drive, Tagovailoa's pass was intercepted by safety Kyle Hamilton, sealing the game for Baltimore.
After battling injuries both in college and now in the NFL, the former Heisman runner-up looked like he had finally found his stride at the next level. Now, his status remains uncertain after returning to action during crunch time. Fortunately for Penix, his replacement didn't leave much to be desired in his brief appearance.
