There was no official announcement from the Maple Leafs on Sunday afternoon, but the club appears to have recalled forward Vinni Lettieri from the Toronto Marlies.
The 31-year-old Lettieri, a veteran of 155 National Hockey League games with four teams, has been added to the Leafs’ roster.
Lettieri was not in the Marlies lineup for a 4-2 loss on Sunday afternoon at home against the Belleville Senators.
In five games with the Marlies, Lettieri is third in team scoring with nine points (three goals and six assists).
The Minnesota native most recently played in the NHL in the 2024-25 season, when he had three goals and two assists in 26 games with the Boston Bruins. Lettieri also has played for the New York Rangers, Anaheim Ducks and Minnesota Wild.
Losers of three consecutive games going into their home match on Monday against the San Jose Sharks, the Leafs could use a bit of a spark.
Frankly, though, the offensive way out of the team’s slump falls on the shoulders of the usual suspects — veterans Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Kirill Marchenko and Jack Roslovic, among others.
Stars need to shine
At the same time, it’s worth noting that the Leafs scored four goals in losses against Utah and Buffalo before scoring once in a 4-1 loss against the New York Islanders on Saturday night.
The Leafs, who had a full day off on Sunday, had both the roster space and room under the cap to add Lettieri. For the time being, there has not been a player sent down to the Marlies in a corresponding move.
Lettieri’s best season in the NHL came in 2021-22 when he had 10 points (five goals and five assists) in 31 games for Anaheim.
In the Marlies’ run to a Calder Cup championship last spring, Lettieri, led the club in scoring with 26 points (11 goals and 15 assists) in 23 games.
Signed by the Leafs to a one-year contract in July 2025, the 5-foot-10, 184-pound Lettieri was re-signed to a one-year pact, carrying an average annual value of $850,000 US, this past July.
