This initiative focuses on social inclusion, active ageing, and tackling loneliness, building on year-round support services and community projects.
In Tavira, October will highlight the needs of older residents, with a programme of activities designed to encourage social interaction, promote independence, and combat isolation.
The programme, Senior Month 2026, aims to give older people more opportunities to meet, learn and take part in community life, while raising awareness of the challenges associated with an ageing population.
According to the Municipality of Tavira, the initiative is part of efforts carried out throughout the year, in partnership with organisations within the local Social Network, which seeks to address population ageing, loneliness, social isolation, and the geographical spread of the region.
The objective is to help older residents remain active members of their communities, with access to appropriate support and the conditions needed to maintain their quality of life.
Local projects
The municipality is involved in several projects offering psychosocial support to older residents, including Cuidame-te, Lado a Lado, Lado a Lado 2.0 – CLSD 5 G, Amor com Tempero 2.0, Info. Cuidador 2.0 and Projeto 360.º Saúde Mental Algarve 2.0.
Their activities cover a range of needs, from cognitive stimulation and individual psychological support to physical exercise, senior fitness classes and initiatives focused on information, awareness and disease prevention.
These projects are complemented by cooperation with social organisations across the municipality, including services such as day centres, home support and social canteens, alongside other forms of assistance for older people and their families.
Together, these responses aim to help residents retain their independence for as long as possible, preventing or delaying situations that could lead to greater dependence or the need for residential care.
Priorities remain
During the year, Tavira also runs activities that promote physical exercise, healthy eating, mental health, disease prevention, and health literacy, as well as training and support for carers.
The municipality’s approach to healthy ageing includes the Mediterranean Diet, reflecting its links with balanced nutrition, social interaction, and healthier lifestyles.
Community partnerships
Among the efforts to combat loneliness are creating opportunities for older people to socialise, learn, and participate in local life.
The Senior Age Group, part of Tavira’s Social Network, brings together local organisations to identify needs, share resources and coordinate support for the municipality’s older population.
This group provides a platform for joint initiatives, helping ensure that services respond to the needs of residents and their families.
