Just over a month after first revealing that it was working on a substantial post-release patch for The Blood of Dawnwalker, developer Rebel Wolves has released update 1.1. The long-awaited overhaul of the vampire RPG brings new features, system improvements, and the only thing that ever really matters in a video game: the ability to pet animals.
We knew update 1.1 was going to be released sometime this week thanks to Rebel Wolves, but the exact date the patch would drop wasn't clear. Rather than giving fans a heads-up, the studio suddenly pushed it live this morning. Console players will be happy to know that the update is out for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in addition to PC. Some of the previously confirmed highlights of the patch include a new difficulty setting, the ability to pet cats and dogs, and a way to reset abilities. That is by no means everything.
The full patch notes are extremely long, containing pages and pages worth of fixes and improvements. According to Rebel Wolves, there are over 1,100 of them. The patch notes are broken into sections: new features, miscellaneous, general, gameplay, quests, narrative, art, audio, plugin, and stability. While I won't go through all of them, here are a few tidbits worth pointing out.
- Added a "Buyback" feature when interacting with merchants.
- Boar patrols will no longer become immortal and come running to Coen after he uses Voracious Bite on other animals.
- Beehive can no longer provide infinite money.
- Improved targeting, locking onto, and disengaging from enemies.
The biggest omission in the patch notes is New Game Plus, which fans have demanded. Rebel Wolves is looking into the option, but there is no hard news on when or if it will be added to The Blood of Dawnwalker.
Will there be a Blood of Dawnwalker 2?
Rebel Wolves has stated that Coen's story is planned as a series extending beyond the first game. The studio is already looking for more talent to join the team and work on the next chapter, which would see Coen in a new time period. As a post-credits scene shows, Coen lives into the modern day, so there are plenty of adventures for him to get up to on the way to that point.
One of The Blood of Dawnwalker's most divisive features may not stick around in future installments. The RPG has a time mechanic that limits how much players can do before facing the game's final boss. While it's a great way to encourage players to let go of a completionist mindset, some don't like it. Rebel Wolves isn't married to the mechanic, saying the team won't force it into each game if it doesn't make sense.
