The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has announced that funding shortages have forced it to significantly cut food assistance in Gaza, depriving around 500,000 people of monthly food aid.
The organisation reported on Monday, October 19, that it would reduce the number of people receiving monthly food assistance from 1.6 million to 1.1 million.
This comes as two-thirds of Gaza’s population struggle to access sufficient food.
According to the report, the number of daily hot meals provided to people who cannot cook has been reduced from 250,000 to 150,000.
Some families in remote areas of Gaza are now receiving hot meals only every other day.
The WFP said that around 1.4 million people, equivalent to two-thirds of Gaza’s population, are facing critical levels of food insecurity or worse, including approximately 200,000 people in emergency conditions.
