From Philippine television to teaching in Beverly Hills, Eduard Bañez reflects on starting over, financial responsibility and empowering the next generation.
Former Nickelodeon talent Eduard Bañez has taken a different path since his early years in Philippine entertainment. A member of ABS-CBN’s Star Magic Batch 15, he built a career in television, hosting for MTV Asia and working with NET25 and TV5 before moving to the United States.
Today, Bañez works as a health and physical education teacher at Ralph Waldo Emerson Middle School in Beverly Hills while exploring digital media through Spluk.PH, a platform he co-founded to connect international stories with Filipino audiences.
Starting over in America came with challenges, particularly adjusting to a different culture.
“I had hard times adjusting here, especially to the culture,” Bañez said. Over time, he grew accustomed to American routines and learned to navigate life beyond the entertainment industry.
His experience abroad also shaped his views on financial responsibility. He encourages Filipinos to prepare for life’s uncertainties rather than leave everything to chance.
“The ‘bahala na’ mindset is the most common in everyone,” he said, urging people to move away from relying entirely on fate.
For Bañez, financial preparedness offers greater security and freedom to make decisions, although he recognizes that saving is more difficult for people with limited income and opportunities.
Despite building a life overseas, Bañez remains proud of the qualities he associates with being Filipino, including perseverance, resourcefulness and the ability to find solutions in difficult circumstances. In a previous interview, he said he missed the warmth of fellow Filipinos, the energy of Manila and the familiarity of Filipino food, describing these as part of what makes home irreplaceable.
While he has no immediate plans to return to performing in front of the camera, Bañez has expressed interest in working in entertainment again through content creation and production. His experiences in broadcasting and education have given him different ways to share stories and impart knowledge, allowing him to pursue creative work while continuing to champion the values he hopes to pass on to younger generations.
Now working in education and digital media, Bañez hopes to use his experience to make a difference beyond the screen.
Asked what he advocates for today, apart from the former Nickelodeon personality audiences remember, he pointed to freedom, independence and education.
“I advocate the freedom and independence for everyone and [being] free from slavery,” he said.
He also emphasized the importance of equipping children with a strong education and practical knowledge to help them navigate everyday life. / JAT S
