By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police have confirmed that social media influencer Benjamin Eduardo Garcia, 27, and Mexican businessman Sergio Martinez Ramirez, 36, were charged with discharging a firearm in public following Saturday morning’s shooting incident near Social Lounge on the Philip Goldson Highway.
During Tuesday’s police press briefing, investigators recounted that officers heard gunshots around 1:30 a.m. on October 10 and subsequently pursued a Ford F-250 pickup truck seen leaving the area. The vehicle was intercepted near the Pallotti roundabout, where both men were detained.
Police said Garcia informed officers that he possessed a licensed firearm, which was subsequently recovered from the vehicle.
However, investigators did not identify which of the two men allegedly fired the shots or provide further details about the evidence supporting the charges. Police maintained that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain ongoing.
As previously reported by BBN, police formally charged both men on Sunday after disputing earlier media reports that Garcia had been released without charges.
During Tuesday’s briefing, police indicated that the men were scheduled to appear in court but did not provide details of the proceedings or any determination concerning bail.
Both men are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
