Shillong, Oct 13: A surprise inspection by the Jaintia National Council (JNC) on Tuesday led to the closure of several non-tribal-run shops in Khliehriat West for operating without valid licences.
The checking was carried out by the Central Executive Committee (CEC) of the JNC in the presence of JHADC officials, under the provisions of the JHADC Trading by Non-Tribals Rules, 2015.
JNC CEC General Secretary Wanshwa Suting said the drive was launched after the Council noted a large number of non-tribals running businesses in East Jaintia Hills district.
“The principal purpose was to verify whether these establishments possessed requisite licences and supporting documents,” Suting told media persons.
He said the lack of licences is directly linked to revenue loss for the autonomous council. “The absence of these licences and documents is one of the main reasons for the loss of JHADC revenue and funds,” he said.
During the inspection, several shops were found without trading licences and service documents, while some were operating illegally without any papers.
Suting said such unauthorised businesses affect local people, especially when trades that locals can undertake are occupied by non-tribal operators.
After the inspection, JNC ordered closure of the violating establishments and issued strict warnings. JHADC officials also warned of strong action if illegal trading is found again.
For those who possessed trading licences but lacked service documents, a one-week deadline has been given to furnish the same, Suting said, adding that non-compliance will invite strict action from the Council.
