The Coimbatore Corporation has surveyed 1,43,606 buildings across its five zones to assess rainwater harvesting facilities as part of an ongoing drive to improve rainwater conservation.
Corporation officials said the survey, covering residential buildings, government buildings and commercial establishments, had been under way for a week up to October 13. Building owners have been instructed to maintain rainwater harvesting structures that are not being properly maintained.
Corporation staff are carrying out the survey on a rotational basis, ward by ward, across all 100 wards. Awareness programmes are also being conducted in Corporation and government schools, with speech, drawing, singing and slogan-recitation competitions on rainwater harvesting.
Separately, the Corporation has undertaken desilting of stormwater drains and canals ahead of the northeast monsoon. A sum of ₹50 lakh has been allocated to each of the five zones for desilting and clearing blockages, while another ₹50 lakh per zone has been earmarked for road repairs.
Desilting work has been taken up along 120.44 km of drains, of which 58.46 km has been completed, with the remaining work under way, officials said.
In the Central Zone, desilting has been carried out along the 3.195-km Rajavaikkal in Ward 62 at a cost of ₹25 lakh and the 2.695-km Kulathuvaikkal at ₹14.5 lakh. Work is also under way to desilt a 3.25-km stretch of the Sanganoor canal at an estimated cost of ₹24 lakh.
